History
In September 1999, Cindy McFarland and her sister Cheryl Lacotta decided
Tucson needed a women’s cycling club and created the Desert Foxes. The
sisters wanted to help out several girls who wanted to start road
riding and racing. They gathered spare parts, put together two complete
bikes and got them on the road.
Since then, the club has grown to over 50
active members. We have scheduled rides for all levels of riders, and we
sponsor a race team for those members who would like to compete in USCF
sanctioned races. The Desert Foxes
are active in promoting cycling in the Tucson community. We are responsible
for six races a year in Tucson including the
State Cyclocross Championships, and the Grand Canyon State Games (in
Tucson). We also support the state level cycling competition for Special Olympics
Arizona, and assist with Tucson’s Senior Olympic
cycling competition. Mission
The mission of the Desert Foxes is to provide an avenue through recreational
and competitive cycling for women of all ages and levels of experience
interested in increasing fitness, creating healthier habits, learning
nutrition, and expanding skills. Requirements
The club’s focus is on having fun, enjoying cycling, and being safe on the
road, track or on the trail. We do not charge any dues to join the Desert
Foxes; however, we do have three requirements for membership. To
become a member, you must 1) Fill out a Member Form, 2) Purchase a
club jersey, and 3) volunteer at a minimum of two Desert Fox sponsored
events annually. Fulfilling these minimal requirements will enable you
to join the team listserve, which will keep you informed of club rides and
activities. Additionally, members enjoy a 10% discount at Fair Wheel
Bikes, discounts on Rudy Project sunglasses, and will have the opportunity
to participate in several team equipment orders placed throughout the year.
Members will also benefit from the knowledge of our two team coaches, and
may participate in various maintenance workshops, skill sessions, and
nutrition/health clinics sponsored by the club.
Rules Because of our Open Enrollment
policy, we do have rules that we require that every member abide by.
